Frost heaving. Second of three images showing a weathering process called frost heaving occurring around a medium-sized stone on a patch of soil on a river bank. Frost heaving occurs in frost-susceptible soils,as water penetrating upwards from the water table freezes and forms an ice layer. This ice layer displaces the overlying frozen ground upwards, sometimes by as much as 30 centimetres. Photographed in winter in British Columbia,Canada, after 24 hours of sub-zero temperatures | |
