Bromine in a flask. Bromine, part of the halogen group of the periodic table (group 17),is a non-metallic element, and the only non-metal that is a liquid at room temperature. In elemental form it is a red-brown,corrosive and toxic liquid (Br2) that boils at 59 degrees Celsius. Its main use is in fire retardant compounds. The liquid (bottom of flask) is weakly bonded and easily evaporates to form the orange gas seen here, which has spread out to fill the flask by diffusion. Bromine takes its name from a Greek word meaning stench | |
