Fleet Street,London. Early photograph, dating from around 1880,with crowds and horse-drawn traffic on the eastern end of Fleet Street,London,UK,looking towards St Paul's Cathedral to the east. This street was famed as the home of British newspapers. The gas lamps at left bear the names of the Press Association (founded 1868) and the pub Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese (known by that name since the 17th century). The photographic printing technique used here was halftone printing, with the resulting print known as a halftone. This printing technique became successful in the early 1880s,and this is one of the first such prints | |
