This institution,used for business transactions,was founded in 1565. The original building was destroyed in the Great Fire of London (1666). This building (1844),by architect William Tite,was the third to be built on the site. This colonnaded entrance has pediment sculptures by Richard Westmacott. The equestrian statue (1844) is of the Duke of Wellington. The photographic printing technique used here was autotypy,with the resulting photograph called an autotype |
