Second Tacoma Narrows Bridge. This road suspension bridge (opened 1950) spans 1822 metres across the Tacoma Narrows strait in Puget Sound,in the US state of Washington. It replaced a similar bridge (1940) that had collapsed on 7 November 1940 due to aeroelastic flutter in gale-force winds. The new design included extra bracing, space for wind to pass through, and dampers,to prevent a repeat of the collapse. The deck is 60 metres above the water, carrying State Route 16. A twin bridge (2007) now runs parallel to this one. Photographed in 1993 for the Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) | |
