Hell Gate Bridge construction,New York City,USA. This steel through-arch railroad bridge, built from 1912,was opened in September 1916. It was designed by Austrian-US engineer Gustav Lindenthal (1850-1935). Two travelling cranes (centre),used to construct each side of the arch, have met in the middle at a height of 93 metres. The railroad level and the two towers either side are not yet built. This bridge spans 310 metres, crossing Hell Gate,a tidal strait in New York's East River. At the time,it was the world's longest steel arch bridge. This photograph, from the Bain News Service, dates from 30 September 1915 |
