Gamma-ray burst (GRB) and galaxies. Artwork of GRB 090323 (centre left) emitting bright jets (left and right),with the jet at right shining through two young galaxies (pink) in the early universe. GRB 090323 is around 12 billion light years from Earth (redshift of 3.57) in the constellation of Coma Berenices. It was observed on 23 March 2009. Analysis of the spectrum of the light passing through these galaxies from this GRB have shown that the galaxies are richer in heavier chemical elements than expected.
