This is a Lightweight Chemical Detector (LCD) produced by the Smiths Detection company,a division of the global technology multinational Smiths Group. An LCD samples the air continuously and can detect a range of toxic chemicals within seconds,triggering an alarm. LCDs are used by emergency workers and military personnel in many countries worldwide. In the UK,Smiths Detection's work on LCDs won a Queen's Award for Enterprise in the Innovation category for 2011
