Nightingale at Scutari hospital. Artwork of British nurse Florence Nightingale (centre left,1820-1910) in a ward at the hospital at Scutari (in Istanbul,Turkey) during the Crimean War (1854-1856). Already an experienced nurse,Nightingale was made director of nursing operations. At the time, disease spread quickly due to overcrowding, poor ventilation and bad drains. Nightingale advocated light and airy hospitals (open windows and stove pipe shown here) with clean staff and good sanitary engineering, helping to reduce the mortality rate. This is an 1856 lithograph of a work by war artist William Simpson (1823-1899) | |
