Yerkes Observatory entrance sign. This observatory was founded in 1897 by US astronomer George Ellery Hale. The funds came from US financier Charles Yerkes, who donated nearly $300,000 to the University of Chicago. Yerkes Observatory is located in a 77-acre woodland site on Lake Geneva,in the village of Williams Bay,Wisconsin, over 100 kilometres north of Chicago. The University of Chicago attempted to sell the site for redevelopment in 2006,but the plans failed due to local opposition and calls for preservation of the historic site. Since then, the site has been used for a mixture of research and science education | |
