Alchemist at work. 18th-century engraving of a 17th-century artwork published under the title 'The Alchymist'. The alchemist is using a pair of bellows to stoke a fire on which a potion or chemical preparation is being heated. The inscription (not shown) states: 'He's in Belief of Chymistry,so bold,if his dream last,he'll turn the Age to Gold' (referring to alchemical transformations). This is a quote from Act I,Scene I,of 'The Alchemist' (1610),a comedy by English playwright Ben Jonson (1572-1637). This etching on wove paper,by Irish engraver William Baillie (1723-1792),is after Flemish artist David Teniers II (1610-1690) | |
