Debtor's prison. Satirical artwork by the English artist William Hogarth (1697-1764) titled 'Confined in the Fleet Prison'. This work is the seventh in a series of eight artworks called 'The Rake's Progress'. This series traces the decline and fall of Tom Rakewell, the heir of a rich merchant, who comes to London and carelessly spends all his money and as a debtor is jailed in Fleet Prison. The inscription across bottom refers to his wife's reproaches,a swooning woman and child, and the chemist (alchemist) by the furnace (background). The original artworks date from the 1730s,with this engraving published posthumously in 1768 | |
