CT scanning of dolphin skull. Researcher studying a dolphin skull (on screen) using the newly installed computed tomography (CT) scanner at the French National Museum of Natural History (MNHN),Paris,France. Called the AST-RX (X-Ray Tomography Scientific Access Platform),this high-performance scanner cost over 800,000 euros. Designed for non-invasive scanning and 3D modelling of fossil and biological specimens,it allows the microscopic imaging of internal anatomical structures that could not otherwise be studied without destroying the specimens.
