Triceratops fossil skull. Museum display of a Triceratops horridus fossil skull,found in Wyoming,USA,and dating from 70 million years ago. Triceratops was a dinosaur that lived during the late Cretaceous period. It was a herbivorous dinosaur with a distinctive set of horns and a neck shield. It could reach a length of up to nine metres,with the two main horns up to a metre long. A smaller horn was present on the snout. It may have used its horns and its neck shield in defence or in courtship and dominance displays.
