Scanning human fossil bone. German anthropologist using a peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT) scanner on a human fossil bone. Scans such as this are carried out to examine the internal and detailed anatomy of the fossils, and to help construct detailed 3D models. pQCT is a technique used to measure bone mineral density (BMD) in peripheral bones, such as those of the arms and legs. For fossil studies, the technique is also used to study muscle attachment points and other soft tissue residues on fossil bones.
