Cro-Magnon 1 research. Researcher with an endocast of the Cro-Magnon 1 fossil skull (left). 3D scans (background) were used to produce the endocast. This fossil, from an elderly male, dates from around 28,000 years ago,and was found in the Dordogne in southern France in 1868. Cro-Magnons were an early European culture of modern humans (Homo sapiens sapiens). This 2010 study found that this specimen's brain was around a fifth larger than human brains today.
