Frog tadpole. Macrophotograph of a view from below of a tadpole of the European common frog (Rana temporaria). Frogs are air-breathing amphibians. Their larval stage (tadpoles) are wholly aquatic, and develop from fertilised eggs. This tadpole has reached the stage where the hind legs have formed and the fore legs are emerging. The tail is used for swimming. The legs have feet with webbed digits. The body includes the head (top). Lungs have developed by this stage, but the tadpole remains aquatic visiting the surface to breathe. The fore legs have started to emerge; one has split out (right) and the other is about to do so (left) | |
