Frog tadpole. Macrophotograph of a tadpole of the European common frog (Rana temporaria) next to pond weed. Frogs are air-breathing amphibians. Their larval stage (tadpoles) are wholly aquatic, and develop from fertilised eggs. This tadpole has reached the stage where the hind legs have formed. The tail is made up of central muscles blocks, and two thin fins with blood vessels and chromatophores. The hind legs have feet with webbed digits. The body includes the head with its eyes and jaws for feeding on pond weed. Lungs have developed by this stage, requiring visits to the water's surface to breathe | |
