Spider cuticle. Phase contrast light micrograph of a portion of the cuticle ('skin') of a spider. Visible are three spines, several small hairs, and pores (small circles). One of the spider's spiracles (part of its respiratory system) is at bottom centre. Like other arthropods,a spider's cuticle forms its exoskeleton and consists of a rigid mixture of chitin and protein. The hairs and spines in the cuticle are sensitive to touch, being connected to the spider's nervous system, and are used as sense organs. The cuticle also has a wax layer that functions to help reduce water loss. Magnification: x37 when printed at 10 centimetres wide | |
