Various mid to late 19th Century editions of Darwin's 'Journal of Researches' from his Beagle voyage. After the Origin of Species this book is Darwin's most numerously republished and widely read book. He noted "the success of this my first literary child always tickles my vanity more than any of my other books". Originally published in 1839 as the third part of "The narrative of the voyages of H.M. Ships Adventrue and Beagle" edited by Fitzroy, with the subsidiary title "Journal and Remarks" for Darwin's contribution. Since then it has changed its name four times. Today it is referred to as "The Voyage of the Beagle" but this shelf shows the earlier variants. The standard John Murray version is in Navy Blue, second from the right | |
