From page 1080 of Sebastian Munster's 1552 "Cosmographia" published by S.H. Petri in Basel. The woodcut illustration shows the people who live in India beyond the Ganges (South East Asia). He follows Pliny in describing from left to right: Sciopods - one legged swift people who used their giant foot as a shade; Cyclops with one eye in the middle of their forehead; bicephales with two heads; Blemmyai with their faces on their chest and no heads; and cynocephales with dogs heads, that lived in caves, hunted with weapons, but barked to communicate. These monstrous creatures lurked on the edge of the then known world - where new commerce and exploration threatended to venture | |
