Male bladder wrack. Light micrograph of a section through a male of the seaweed bladder wrack (Fucus vesiculosus). The rounded structures are male conceptacles, the lining of which consist of multi-cellular hairs called paraphyses. Fertile paraphyses branch into tips that bear antheridia, which yield flagellated antherozoids. These male reproductive structures are released through the ostiole (hole at top of conceptacle) to the sea, where they are chemotactically attracted to the conceptacles of female seaweeds to fertile the ova (female reproductive cells).
