Sea anemone. Light micrograph of a longitudinal section through a beadlet sea anemone (Actinia equina). Across lower centre is the gastrovascular cavity, which includes mesenteries with retractor muscles. At centre is the actinopharynx (leading to the mouth) and oral ring (both dark purple). The base (bottom) is where the anemone is glued to its rock. The tentacles (across top, sectioned in several directions) have stinging hairs (cnidiocysts) that paralyse its prey and delivers it through the oral ring to the gastrovascular cavity where it is digested.
