John Lindley (1799-1865),British botanist,gardener and orchidologist. Lindley's career began with him working for British naturalist Sir Joseph Banks,drawing and describing plants. In 1820,Lindley was elected a fellow of the Linnean Society of London. From 1822,he was assistant secretary of the Horticultural Society of London (later the Royal Horticultural Society). In addition to this,he worked as a professor of botany at University College,London,from 1829,holding both positions until 1860. He had been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1828.
