IC 342 spiral galaxy, infrared image. This galaxy is 10.7 million light years from Earth,in the constellation of Camelopardalis. This image was obtained with the IRAC and MIPS instruments on the Spitzer Space Telescope. Infrared radiation of increasing wavelength (decreasing temperature) has been color-coded blue, green, and red. Infrared light shows the structure of this galaxy's dust lanes (green) where new stars are being born. Regions of heavy star formation appear as yellow-red dots. The bright glow of the galactic centre indicates an enormous burst of star formation, making this a starburst galaxy. Image published in 2011 | |
