Starfield for quasar ULAS J1120+0641. Visible-light image of the region around the quasar ULAS J1120+0641. Powered by a black hole with a mass two billion times that of the Sun,this quasar was the most distant yet found at the time of its discovery in June 2011. The light from this object (in the constellation of Leo) has travelled for 13 billion years to reach Earth, meaning it is being observed as it was just 770 million years after the origin of the universe in the Big Bang. Although not visible here,it is located near the centre of this three-degree wide view from the Digitized Sky Survey 2. Image published in June 2011 | |
