Quasar ULAS J1120+0641 (fait red dot, centre),infrared image. Powered by a black hole with a mass two billion times that of the Sun,this quasar was the most distant yet found at the time of its discovery in June 2011. The light from this object (in the constellation of Leo) has travelled for 13 billion years to reach Earth, meaning it is being observed as it was just 770 million years after the origin of the universe in the Big Bang. This image combines data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS). UKIRT is the UK Infrared Telescope. Image published in June 2011 | |
