ALMA Array Operations Site (AOS). ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array) is an array of 66 radio antennas being prepared at the Operations Support Facility (OSF,2900 metres elevation) and then installed here at the AOS (5000 metres elevation) on the arid Chajnantor plateau in the Chilean Andes. These are the 12-metre antennas. Data from the separate antennas is combined by interferometry, making it one of the most powerful telescopes in the world. Observations began in 2011. In the foreground are ice formations characteristic of high-altitude plateaus. Photograph published in September 2011 | |
