ALMA antenna handover. ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array) is an array of 66 radio antennas prepared here in the Chilean Andes at an elevation of 2900 metres, and then moved to an elevation of 5000 metres on the nearby arid Chajnantor plateau. Data from the separate antennas is combined by interferometry, making it one of the most powerful telescopes in the world. This is the handover of the first European antenna (a 12-metre antenna from the AEM consortium) using an ALMA transporter vehicle (yellow) to move it a short distance to the Operations Support Facility.
