Peruvian rain frog (Pristimantis peruvianus) calling at night. In some frogs, the calls made are amplified by inflating throat skin membranes called vocal sacs (one inflated here). Calls are unique to each species, and are used to attract a mate. This species of frog is found in tropical and subtropical forests of the upper Amazon Basin in northern South America. It was formerly known as Eleutherodactylus peruvianus. Photographed in Ecuador | |
