Plato as depicted in Raphael's “School of Athensâ€. It is actually a portrait of Leonardo da Vinci. Plato was an ancient Greek philosopher. His work was,and is,a major influence on the development of European philosophical and scientific thought. He was a pupil of Socrates, founded the Academy in Athens, the first institution of higher learning in the Western world, and taught Aristotle. Plato's spirit of rational inquiry led to today's scientific method.Plato helped to form the first coherent model of the motion of heavenly bodies. He claimed that the planets moved in a circular motion and argued that the Earth was round. He was a contemporary of Hippocrates and wrote on the circulatory system in his dialogue work titled 'Timaeus'. The description was similar to that proposed by the Ancient Egyptians | |
