Circus Maximus, artwork. The Circus Maximus was the largest chariot racetrack in ancient Rome. It was 620 metres long,120 metres wide, and could hold around 150,000 spectators. It was also a public space, used for religious processions and for markets when no races were being held. Its use for chariot races and games reached its peak in the first century BC and first two centuries AD. The seating was mostly wooden, until rebuilt in stone under the Emperor Trajan in the 2nd century AD. It fell into disuse from the 6th century, and is now a public park with the original track buried under centuries of soil from floods | |
