Olympus Mons and surroundings,Mars,computer-generated image based on radar data from the Mars Global Surveyor. Olympus Mons (lower right) is a shield volcano and the largest mountain in the solar system. It is 600 kilometres across and rises to a height of 24 kilometres. Its caldera is at bottom right. North of Olympus Mons is a rugged, hilly area called Lycus Sulci. The bow-shaped area further north is Acheron Fossae. This image shows the area in the evening, half an hour before nightfall. Mars is a cold desert world with a thin atmosphere that only slowly erodes its impact craters (some seen here) | |
