Thought-controlled robotic arm. Electrode being implanted on the chest of Austrian double amputee Christian Kandlbauer. This is one of several electrodes that pick up signals from arm nerves re-routed to existing nerves and muscles (here the pectoral muscle) to allow direct mind control of a robotic prosthetic arm on his left-hand side. A standard prosthetic was used on his right-hand side. Kandlbauer, who died in a car crash in October 2010,pioneered this technology in Europe. The successful development and fitting of the arm was carried out by the German company Otto Bock from June 2006 to January 2009 | |
