Frederick Fleet (1887-1965),lookout on RMS Titanic. Titanic, the largest ocean liner ever built at the time, was reputed to be unsinkable. However, during its maiden voyage it struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic on the night of 14 April 1912 and sank with the loss of 1517 lives. Fleet was one of two crewmen stationed in the lookout post at the time. However, calm moonless conditions meant Fleet's sighting of the iceberg came too late to avoid the collision. This 1912 photograph is from a collection mostly taken in Washington DC,where Fleet testified on 23 and 24 April at the US Senate inquiry into the disaster | |
