Slate mine waste mountain and houses. Vast mountain of waste from slate mining looming behind houses and a former chapel at Blaenau Ffestiniog,North Wales. This was the location of the largest slate mine in the world, with production peaking in the second half of the 19th century. Tens of thousands of tons of slate were produced, mainly for use in the construction industry, producing these large mountains of waste. The former chapel, dating from Victorian times,is Capel Rhiw. Since 1968 it has been the studio and residence of the British artist, sculptor and Royal Academician David Nash (born 1945). Photographed in July 2011 | |
