Great Orme limestone strata. Cliff (upper centre) with exposed inclined strata (dipping bedding planes) forming part of an outcrop of Carboniferous limestone on the Great Orme,a coastal headland in North Wales. The buildings in the foreground are part of the seaside resort of Llandudno. A cable car (upper left) takes visitors to the summit of the headland (207 metres). Limestone is a sedimentary rock, forming in layers (strata). Carboniferous limestone formed from deposits laid down under ancient seas between 363 and 325 million years ago. These strata were later uplifted and exposed by erosion. Photographed in July 2011 | |
