Statue of Louis Pasteur (1822-1895),French microbiologist and chemist. Pasteur proposed the germ theory of disease, and developed vaccines against rabies and anthrax. He also worked on fermentation and found that gentle heating can preserve liquids. This is the process of pasteurisation, now widely used in the food industry. This statue is on top of a monument to Pasteur that was inaugurated in July 1904 in the Place de Breteuil,Paris,France. The marble monument with allegorical figures around the base, was by the French sculptor Alexandre Falguiere (1831-1900),and completed posthumously. Photographed in 2011 | |
