Pendolino tilting train, tilting as it rounds a bend on the West Coast Main Line in the UK. Pendolino trains, designed to tilt to enable them to travel along bends at high speeds, are used in a number of countries across Europe. They were first used in the UK by Virgin Trains in 2002. This is an Alstom Class 390 Pendolino, with nine sections. It can carry 439 passengers and reach speeds of over 200 kilometres per hour. The West Coast Main Line was upgraded between 1998 and 2008 to allow Pendolino trains to be used.
