Rose mildew fungus. Light micrograph of a section through tissue from a rose plant infected with rose mildew fungus (Erysiphe pannosa). Erysiphe is a parasitic ascomycete whose spores penetrate the epidermis of the host plant. The fungal hyphae produce haustoria (round purple patches),which invade the cells and feed on the nutrients. Some hyphae spread over the surface of the plant where their conidiospores (spores) look like white powder. The fungus also produces spore-bearing asci (oval pink) with ascospores that are released in Spring. Magnification: x138 when printed 10 centimetres wide | |
