Pine stem. Light micrograph of a section through the stem of a pine (Pinus sp.) tree, showing xylem tissue near the central pith. The xylem is made up of tracheid cells (light pink). There are thin files of parenchyma and tracheid cells (pale blue) of the primary (lined with red cells) and subsidiary rays, which pass food substances radially. The large circular lacunae (resin ducts) are lined with parenchyma cells (light blue and green) that produce resin. The tracheid walls of many cells have bordered pits (green),which pass water and minerals side-ways between cells. Magnification: x70 when printed 10 centimetres wide | |
