Annular solar eclipse sequence. Solar ring around the Moon at the midpoint of an annular solar eclipse, together with the Moon and Sun just before and after the mid-point. Solar eclipses occur when the Moon passes across the Sun as seen from Earth. This only occurs at New Moon, and is most commonly a partial eclipse. When the Moon is at a distant point in its orbit,an annular solar eclipse occurs and the corona (revealed in a total eclipse) remains hidden due to the brightness of the solar ring.
