Giant anteater and cub,19th-century artwork. This captive anteater family is in the zoological gardens of Stuttgart,Germany. The mother is using her tongue to feed, and the father is in the background. The giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla) is found throughout much of tropical Central and South America. It feeds almost exclusively on ants and termites. The single cub rides on its mother's back, becoming independent at 24 months old. This is thought to have been the first anteater born in captivity.
