Hydroelectric generators,19th-century artwork. These generators are part of the hydroelectric power station built from 1895 on the US side of Niagara Falls. The structures seen here are Westinghouse dynamos, with the turbines on the next level down. Water passing through the turbines turns their blades, causing rotation of the magnets within the dynamos, which generates electrical power. The first major power station built here,75 megawatts of power were being produced by 1896.
