Pedal-powered boat,19th-century artwork. Known as the cycloscaphe, this invention had three men using pedals to turn a chain (at rear) that is connected to a propeller underneath the boat. Sixty pedal rotations per minute would produce 500 revolutions of the propeller, with a distance of some 7 kilometres covered in around 45 minutes. Here, the boat has a coxswain and two passengers.
