Electric tramway generator,19th-century artwork. This is the power generation room for an electric tramway system in New Haven,Connecticut,USA. Electrification of trams (also called streetcars) took place in the 1880s and 1890s. This site generated enough power for eight tramway lines and around 80 tram carriages. The trams drew the power from overhead cables. Allis steam engines and pistons operated Westinghouse dynamos to generate the electricity (300 horsepower,450 amperes,500 volts).
