Coconut rope production,19th-century artwork. The fibres for this rope are obtained from the husk of the coconut, producing a material known as coir. Here,a spindle is being used to aid the twisting and stretching used to produce strands and eventually ropes from the mass of fibres each worker is holding. This type of rope is mostly produced in southern India and Sri Lanka, though it is also produced on Pacific and Caribbean islands.
