Face mask production,19th-century artwork. During the 19th century, face masks of famous people,or fancy dress masks for use at masked balls, were popular. The moulds were made of wax or plaster of paris, from which the masks to be worn were made from materials ranging from paper to linen. The masks being made here are full ones, but half masks covering only the eyes and nose were also made. Both types of masks would be painted and decorated by hand.
