Bicycle monorail, early 20th-century artwork. Man operating a cycling device on a suspension railway system. This basic mechanism can be used for any carrier suspended from an overhead rail (monorail). The use of bicycles instead of capsules was pioneered in the 1890s in Germany and the USA. The invention of the 'schwebe bicycle' is generally credited to an Albert Charlier, with Carl Eugene Langer later developing the technology into what became the Wuppertal Schwebebahn (Wuppertal Floating Tram).
