Lemur, early 20th-century artwork. This is a lemur known as the aye-aye (Daubentonia madagascariensis). The original caption for the drawing used the older classification of the genus Cheiromys. Lemurs are a group of tree-dwelling primates found only on the island of Madagascar. They were first described systematically by naturalists in the 18th century, with the taxonomy standardised in the 1920s and 1930s.
